soapnut recipe ingredients

50g Soapnut Shells

1 Litre of water

soapnut recipe instructions

  1. Boil 50g of soapnut shells with 1 litre of water for 20 minutes. After 20 mins you will be left with 500 ml of soapnut liquid. When cool pour into an airtight container, glass jar preferably.

  2. Return the boiled soapnut shells to the pan and repeat step above three more times. After doing this you will have 2 litres of soapnut liquid from only 50g of soapnut shells! AWESOME VALUE!

  3. Add some grapefruit seed extract (10ml per litre) or citric acid (0.5% ot total amount) to help it last a bit longer.

Making soapnut liquid in a hurry!...

Just drop some soapnuts in a blender with a litre of liquid, when the soapnut shells are completely blended, using a muslin cloth filter the liquid and poor into an airtight container...voila! Don't forget to add the preservative :)

Using Your Soapnut Liquid

Washing clothes: 1 cup for half loads, 2 cups for full loads. For more info on washing laundry click here.

Dishwasher: Freeze some liquid into ice cubes, then add two ice cubes to the cutlery tray and wash as directed.

Household cleaner: Add 400ml soapnut liquid and 100ml white vinegar to a spray bottle. Add 20 drops of tea tree, lavender and eucalyptus. Or try this recipe.

Fomaing wash for everything and everyone!: Fill your foaming pump bottle 3/4 full, add 1 tablespoon of castile soap of your choice. Have a look at our recipe page.

Reduce, reuse, recycle...

Reduce: Let's face it we are doing that just by using soapnuts...we are reducing the impact on the environment...yay us!

Reuse: Add them to 500 ml of water and whip up some soapnut foam! Or throw them into a washbag and use them in your laundry.

Recycle: When they are truly exhausted compost 'em!
